B L A C K I S L A N D S - They are inspired by Arnold Böcklin's famous work, "Toteninsel", from 1880. In Böcklin's painting, the island is a place where the dead are led by a ferryman.
It appears to be a lonely, peaceful retreat.
The "Black Islands" are places of hopelessness, consisting of nothing but dark stone.
There is nothing but rock. The setting is empty and black.

D O U B L E P E A K
It was done with a palette knife and fine plaster, and covered with a glaze of Payne's Grey in different shades.
The background and water are also done in Payne's Grey.
This island has a strong, rocky presence and is different from the other pure black islands.

It is like a black wall: steep, almost inaccessible and quiet, even the surrounding sea.

S I G N S - This is a series of images in two phases.
Signs surround us constantly. They provide information, instructions and guidance, or serve as symbols. When taken out of context, however, they can give rise to associations and ambiguities.

T H E X O F P A I N
The X, an ubiquitous sign, tells us tales of prohibition. Placed above any other sign, it says 'Forbidden'. When seen as a cross, it speaks of torture, pain and saints.

W H E R E T O_W H E R E F R O M ?
Arrows are also a common sign. They are used to indicate a particular direction. They usually point in one direction only. However, if there are two arrows, the meaning becomes ambiguous.

T I L T E D V
Letters often represent specific words. Usually, it is the first letter of a word that acquires this sign-like character. The letter V, shaped like two spread fingers, is the sign for victory. Tilt the V and it becomes an open arrow, reminiscent of a pointed boomerang.

U P D O W N ?
There are two arrows again. This time they are close to each other, as if they are cuddling. They point in opposite directions. Together, they convey an ambiguous message. Up or down? First up, then down, or vice versa? Who knows?

B L A C K I S L A N D S - This is the first series of 'Black Islands'.
These are places of hopelessness, consisting of nothing but dark stone.
There is nothing but rock. The setting is empty and black. The inspiration for this series comes from Arnold Böcklin's Toteninsel. The first version was painted in 1880 and is on display at the Kunstmuseum Basel.

P O I N T E D R O C K
This rock was applied directly from the tube onto the surface using heavy body acrylic paint. It was then textured using a palette knife.
The background was made as smooth as possible using a wide brush. The water consists of narrow, slightly raised strips of paint that were applied individually with a palette knife.

G A T E R O C K
Done with a palette knife and fine plaster, then covered with opaque Payne's grey. The scares in the Rock's surface were highlighted with semi-matte varnish.
The background and water were done with Payne's Grey.
The water has an additional cover of semi-matte varnish with the waves in matte Payne's Grey.

B L A C K I S L A N D (NO. 1)
The structure of the rocky island was applied directly from the paint tube and then textured with a palette knife. Some areas were highlighted with semi-matt varnish. The water was painted entirely with this varnish. The slight wave structure was applied with heavy body acrylic paint using a palette knife.
